Social Justice
At St Thomas, our commitment to social justice is deeply rooted in the Mercy values and the teachings of St Thomas the Apostle. We are proud to follow in the footsteps of the Sisters of Mercy, dedicating our efforts to making a positive impact in our community and beyond.
One of the significant ways we embody these values is through our regular participation in cooking for the homeless at the Adelaide Day Centre. This initiative not only provides essential meals to those in need but also fosters a sense of compassion and service among our students and staff.
The Vinnies Winter Appeal Sleep Out is another cornerstone of our social justice activities. By experiencing a night without the comforts of home, our participants gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by the homeless, while raising much-needed funds and awareness for this critical cause.
Throughout the year, we organise various fundraising events and maintain donation bins, ensuring continuous support for those less fortunate. Our Mercy Day stalls are particularly notable, as they bring the community together to raise funds for a variety of causes, reflecting our commitment to helping others in every way we can.
Our dedication to social justice extends to supporting First Nation's children and communities, particularly through our participation in Wear It Yellow Day. This initiative raises awareness and funds for educational and support programs, emphasising our respect for and commitment to Australia's Indigenous communities and the need for reconciliation.
In all these activities, we honour the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy and St Thomas the Apostle by living out their teachings of love, compassion, and justice. Our school community is dedicated to making a tangible difference, guided by the enduring values of mercy and social justice.
