Visible Learning

At St Thomas, we are honoured to be a certified Visible Learning school. Visible Learning is a body of research undertaken by John Hattie to understand what provides the greatest success in learning. This research has explored how evidence can be used to create innovation in the learning environment. Visible Learners as students who can:

  • Articulate what they are learning
  • Explain the next steps in their learning
  • Set learning goals
  • See errors as opportunities for further learning
  • Know what to do when they are stuck
  • Seek feedback

At St Thomas, we aim to develop the capacity of all students to be empowered visible learners with aspirational expectations of learning, progress and achievement. Our students as visible learners are encouraged to think deeply about their learning journey. They can articulate their learning journey and use a set of strategies to be a successful learner, where they are, where they are going and how to get there. Our focus is to create a strong metalanguage of learning to ensure students display learning dispositions, skills, values and attitudes to be successful future oriented lifelong learners. As part of making learning visible, our learning activities have learning intentions and success criteria attached to them.
