Positive Behaviour Learning
At St Thomas School and Preschool, we proudly implement Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS) as our framework for behaviour management, creating a positive and supportive environment where every student can thrive. PBIS is centred around teaching, modelling, and reinforcing positive behaviours through clear expectations and consistent practices.
Our approach begins with explicit teaching of appropriate behaviours across all settings, from classrooms to playgrounds. We use clear, age-appropriate guidelines to help students understand what is expected of them and how to demonstrate respect, responsibility, and readiness to learn. The Student Voice Council are involved in creating videos to explicitly teach our focus behaviours and these are used in classrooms as a platform for discussion.
To encourage and reinforce positive behaviours, we have implemented a system called 'Positive Play Points'. This system allows students to earn points or tokens for demonstrating desired behaviours such as kindness, cooperation, and following school rules. Points are awarded publicly and immediately, reinforcing the behaviour and promoting a positive school culture.
Acknowledging positive behaviours is not only about rewards but also about fostering a sense of pride and achievement in students. It encourages them to take ownership of their actions and contribute positively to their school community. Through PBIS and our 'Positive Play Points' system, we aim to create a supportive and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and motivated to succeed.
